26th October 2019
Windsurfing: Alton Ressy

Wind Stength: 5-30kts
Surf / Sea State: flat
Air Temperature: warm
Sea Temperature: warm
Weather: Sunny / cloud
Max Speed: 22.97 (knots - unless stated otherwise)

Wind forecast was very good with rain later after midday. In the end rain came at 3pm and from 10-12 the wind was very light, typical for the reservoir. River tides were too early for me, as some sailors went Point Clear, others rivers. The forecast for the sea was risky so stayed safe at the Ressy.
Dave Joe and I headed for the Ressy, all on foils with 7 windsurfers on the water. The day turned out horrendous, after rigging 8.5 Goya Mark o Slingshot foil / Exocet RF foil board. DC rigged 9m / Starboard and Joe JP / 6.7 sail.
It started off OK and using the SL switch "C" position with a 76cm infinity wing. This was the first time after have been using the "B" setting which was too close to the back foot, so always having to apply heavy back foot pressure. First flights were OK but not long again due to the gusty conditions. Wind was zero to 15 kts so had to catch gusts, then it dropped almost as quick. However both Joe and Colsey were creaming it showing how its done, by belting along the length of the reservoir whilst me and all the fin sailors were looking tame and not planing. This was really hard work, then the wind kicked in from zero to 30 knots again gusty and almost unsailable for everyone except those 2! They were literally flying along at high speeds chasing each other with Joe using his go pro for some great shots. Both were banking their foils almost 45 degrees in the gybes to avoid the large concrete tower at one end and the protruding banks at the lime tree ends. Very spectacular. Everyone else was getting flattened, and I took cover on land. I went for my fin board but after the stall starts decided it was crap and went back on foil. It was a tough day and I cant count the number of exits thru the front door in the max gusts. Glad I went to watch DC and Joe duels, but wish I hadn't for my body sake. Finally, de-rigging in the rain finished the grey day off, and then I still had a 2 hour swim session with kiddies + a meal later on!
Should have rigged 6.5 or 7m sail an just grad the gusts only, and not worry about the lulls.
